No Surprise that the Medieval Minds of Texas’ GOP Back Junk Science, Says TWO
CHICAGO – Truth Wins Out condemned the Texas Republican Party today for embracing junk science that claims gay people can be converted into heterosexuals through prayer and therapy. Language supporting the discredited practice, condemned by every major medical and mental health association, is contained in a draft of the Texas Republican Party platform, according to a report by The Houston Chronicle.
While the platform deleted language that said, “we affirm that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit,” it added verbiage claiming people can “escape from the homosexual lifestyle.”
“We recognize the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle. No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy.”
The platform language is in response to the barbaric practice of “ex-gay” therapy being banned for minors in California and New Jersey. Similar bills are under consideration in Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia.
“The Texas GOP is infamous for its medieval mindset that gleefully embraces ignorance and backward thinking,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “It is no surprise that the platform supports discredited quack science rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization in the United States. What else would one expect of this group of uncivilized ideologues who place political rhetoric ahead of facts and the lives of real people?”
It is peculiar to endorse such programs now, considering the largest “ex-gay” program, Exodus International, closed down last year after its president claimed that 99.9 percent of his clients had not changed their sexual orientation. One of Exodus’ former poster boys, John Smid (pictured), now lives in Paris, Texas with his boyfriend.
Truth Wins Out (TWO) is a non-profit organization that works to demolish the very foundation of anti-gay prejudice. Our philosophy is simple: We attack the underpinnings of homophobia by debunking harmful lies, discrediting hateful myths, and countering anti-gay organizations. By chipping away at the underlying ignorance that fuels anti-LGBT attitudes, we can ultimately win our fight for fairness and achieve full equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people worldwide.
